More EU investment needed for research in homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine

Publicado el 13 abril 2011 por Fat
MEPs, experts and stakeholders meeting at the European Parliament in Brussels today called on the European Commission to give greater priority to research into complementary medicine, including homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine, in future EU research programmes. The meeting, ‘Homeopathy and Anthroposophic Medicine – what is the evidence?’, chaired by Marian Harkin MEP, examined the evidence base for these well established and widely used European therapeutic systems. The debate was timed to coincide with the Commission’s Green Paper on a Common Strategic Framework for future EU Research and Innovation Funding, which plans to move ahead with proposing specific programmes before the end of the year. Mrs Harkin spoke of the needs of more than 100 million users of these products across Europe: "The fast growing demand for homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine stems from many years of successful practical experience, coupled with the excellent overall safety profile of these therapeutic approaches and their medicinal products. The EU should act now in support of these long-established European therapies to the benefit of more than 100 million European patients and users," she said. Speaking at the meeting, Robert Mathie PhD, Research Development Adviser at the British Homeopathic Association, made a convincing case for the need for further research in homeopathy: "Homeopathy is a complex medical intervention whose diffuse research literature contains positive evidence of clinical effectiveness in over 40% of studies to date. The quality of that evidence and the size of the treatment effects are not clearly defined, however. New insights offer a sharper focus on the necessity, the opportunities and the challenges of further research development," he concluded. Clinical evidence in anthroposophic medicine, based on the daily work of a hospital, was presented by Dr.med. Harald Matthes, Medical Director at the Havelhöhe Hospital in Berlin, which specialises in anthroposophic medicine and was chosen as the best hospital in Germany in a patient survey of 2000 hospitals in 2008. Dr Matthes described anthroposophic medicine as an independent holistic medicine system that considers the multidimensionality of the human being (psychic, mental and spiritual) and develops specific scientific methods of diagnosis and therapy. "Anthroposophic medicine is a valid approach of integrative medicine as defined by the World Health Organisation. It is not a closed system, but a researching and scientific medicine system, a continuously developing medicine concept," he said. The meeting concluded that homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine should be integrated into EU health policy and research programmes for the benefit of European citizens as part of a more integrated and holistic approach to health care in Europe.More EU investment needed for research in homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine

Flower Essences for Depression

(Extraído de Natural Therapies Pages)

Flower essences are a gentle and increasingly popular method of dealing with a range of emotional and mood related conditions, including depression. These are based on the premise that good health is the result of emotional, spiritual and mental harmony – with flower essences able to aid any imbalances. Amanda Howle from Art of Health has had a long standing association with flower essences, and kindly agreed to speak to ntpages and share her insights on this soothing natural therapy.

Firstly tell us a little about yourself ?

“I am a Bach Flower Registered Practitioner and have been using these remedies on my own personal healing journey for over 15 years. I am also a qualified Energetic Healing Practitioner, working with a range of modalities and techniques to balance and repair the body's energy systems. I aim to facilitate and support the body's own inherent healing, allowing the client to reach their fullest potential.”

What in your opinion is the primary benefit of a natural therapy such as this?

“In my opinion, there are many benefits of using natural therapies.  We lead busy lives, we all take on too much; physically, mentally and emotionally, and have less time to relax, to find balance and to just “be”.  The body and mind is an intelligent force – if we only took the time to listen to the messages it is sending, there would be much less disease. We are learning and accepting that our thoughts can have a profound effect on our state of health.  Western medicine certainly has a place.  But if the issue is not life threatening, and time is on your side, natural therapies can work well to compliment western medicine, or even be used as an alternative, with much success.”

How long have flower essences been used for therapeutic use?

“There are a number of different essences on the market; ranging from flower, to shell and crystal. I prefer to work with Edwards Bach’s Flower remedies.  I trust them completely and have had great results with them myself and with clients.  Dr Bach discovered the 38 remedies back in the late 1920’s/early 1930’s in Britain.  He discovered the 12 Healers first and published his works based on that.  However, over the next few years he went on to discover 26 more.  This is where he felt his work was complete - the 38 remedies cover all aspects of human emotions.  It doesn’t matter that we now live in a world with the threat of global terrorism, or that we have less personal relationships as a result of technology, and longer working hours.  The fundamental emotions remain the same as they did 80 years ago - we still feel fear, insecurity, isolation etc”

Which range of essences are most commonly utilised?

“The first name that most people recognise when you mention Bach Flower Remedies is Rescue Remedy.  This can be purchased in many forms, from the drops, a spray, pastels and cream.  This remedy is ideal for situations of panic, shock or “emergency situations”. This may include stressful situations such a job interviews, driving test, exam etc.  Rescue Remedy Sleep has the addition of white chestnut to aid sleep (if the cause of sleeplessness is caused by unwanted, recurring thoughts).  There are of course many causes of sleeplessness and a registered Bach Flower Practitioner can help find the right treatment for you.”

What is the effect of flower essences on our health?

“Flower remedies treat the emotions not the physical symptoms – they are medicines for the emotions.  Each remedy treats a specific negative emotional state by encouraging the corresponding positive quality that lies dormant within us.   For example someone who feels anxious will take a remedy that brings out their natural reserves of courage.  Dr Bach believed that the ultimate cause of disease was a lack of inner harmony, and that by resolving this disharmony, health would come back naturally.  The remedies are non invasive and non addictive and can be taken by anyone, anytime.

You treat many people suffering from depression – what symptoms does one need to look out for?

“Depression is common and takes many different forms.  It may be that we feel bad about the way we look, or perhaps we don’t earn as much money as our friend.  Perhaps our relationships are breaking down and we feel isolated, or inadequate.  Perhaps we have recently lost a loved one.  Perhaps our depression is fleeting; it may descend out of the blue, and lift just as quickly.  Or it may drag us down for months; it may affect our appetite, our ability to function in the “normal world”, we may loose our job, our partner, our pride or our self esteem.  It may become so bad that we fear we may loose control of our minds.  We may become a risk to ourselves or to others.”

How can flower essences help with depression?

“Flower essences are non-invasive and non addictive.  They can work alongside prescribed medication to ease the symptoms of depression, or they can be used alone.  I have treated a number of people in both circumstances.  For those who made the personal decision to avoid medication, the remedies worked well to bring balance back into their lives, so that they no longer felt depressed.  For those clients who have been on medication for a while, it is not my role to persuade them to stop.  Rather, I work with them, to recommend remedies that will compliment their treatment.”

How can they be effective in the treatment of depression?

“As described earlier, each remedy treats a specific negative emotional state by encouraging the corresponding positive quality that lies dormant within us. This brings balance.  It is important to identify the right remedy, which is why you are encouraged to see a practitioner and not buy pre-mixed products for generic issues.  Everyone’s description of depression is different.  If someone describes themselves as “fed up”, it is important to establish exactly what fed up means to the individual.”

Which essences might you use to treat depression?

“Typically a remedy bottle can be made with up to six or seven essences.  These are chosen by the practitioner and client together. Through the client profiling and case study discussions the practitioner will make recommendations for the remedies that he/she feels would be appropriate.  If the client disagrees with any suggestions then these can be excluded.  There are a number of different remedies that can be used for “depression”.  For example depression for one person may mean feeling sad and lonely, for another it may mean feeling worthless.  Therefore, there is no one magic depression remedy that you can buy off the shelf.  Bach Flower Remedies are personal to the person being treated. A major depression would call for a number of remedies and professional medical help. Remedies suitable for “depression” include Mustard, Gentian, Gorse, Sweet Chestnut, and also (but not limited to) Oak, Willow and Crab Apple.”

Why do you think so many people are depressed?

“We are time poor, cash poor.  We communicate with our friends over the internet, not face to face anymore.  We don’t have time to confide in others.  We are too busy to take care of ourselves properly.  We have become more competitive, we are given unrealistic “ideals” of perfection to strive for.  We are not listening to the early warning signs that our bodies and minds are signalling that something is out of balance.”

What does a consultation consist of?

“The initial consultation will take 60 minutes as I take a brief client history to understand why the client has come to see me. We will cover family history and whether or not the complaint has happened before. We will try to establish what the triggers are and exactly how the situation makes them feel. It is your outlook and your state of mind (both positive & negative) that we will work with.”

How likely are reactions or allergies to flower essences?

“Bach Flowers are considered safe and suitable for use by children, pregnant or nursing mothers, the ill and infirm and even plants and animals. Ideally a small quantity of preservative (i.e. brandy or cider vinegar) is included in a treatment bottle, particularly in warmer climates.  If a client is allergic or adverse through medical or religious reasons, to using alcohol then the treatment bottle can be made without it.  For those not wishing to consume any alcohol at all, the remedies could be taken externally and applied to pulse points.  The remedies can be taken safely alongside other natural therapies.”

“What is the difference between reading the materia medica of a remedy and understanding its essence? The difference lies in the mastery of the application of that remedy. Vega Rozenberg will teach you how to apply homeopathy like a master, not only when a remedy is called for, but also in your daily life; so that your indwelling, reason-gifted mind can freely employ your healthy instrument for the higher purposes of your existence. A true master applies his mastery in all areas of his life. Did Hahnemann teach homeopathy was limited to illness or did he just reveal how the law of similars can be applied in one area of expertise? Vega Rozenberg teaches you how the law of similars is applied to life. A seminar with Vega Rozenberg is a gift that you will treasure for the rest of your life.”

Introduction:
A homeopath by the name of Emil Grubbe, M.D. (1875-1960) was the first person to use radiation to treat a person with cancer (Dearborn, 2005).
In January 1896, Grubbe was a student at the Hahnemann Medical College (of Chicago, a famous homeopathic medical school). He gave radiation treatment to Mrs. Rose Lee, a woman with breast cancer.
Grubbe got the idea of using radiation as a treatment for Lee's breast cancer from Reuben Ludlam, M.D., a professor at the homeopathic medical school. Ludlam knew that Grubbe had previously experimented with X-ray as a diagnostic procedure so much that he developed blisters and tumors on his hand and neck as a result of overexposure to this new technology.
Because one of the basic premises of homeopathic medicine is that small doses of a treatment can help to heal those symptoms that large doses are known to cause, Ludlam suggested to Grubbe that radiation may be a treatment for conditions such as tumors because it also causes them.
This incident is but one more example from history in which an insight from a homeopathic perspective has provided an important breakthrough in medical treatment.
Even though Grubbe had to have one hand amputated early in life due to the high exposures received from his early experiences with radiation, he ultimately lived a long and full life of 85 years, in part due to the homeopathic treatment he received throughout his life. Grubbe also had a long and distinguished career as a professor of electro-therapeutics and radiography at Hahnemann Medical College, and he is thought to have become the first professor of Roentgenology in the world (Hodges, 1964).
True to his interests in conveying his discoveries to all doctors, Dr. Grubbe served as professor at four different Chicago medical schools, including homeopathic, eclectic, and allopathic medical schools.
Grubbe's contribution to medicine and science was further enhanced by the fact that he was the first to use lead as a protection against radiation exposure.
The point of this introduction is to confirm that homeopaths have a long history of using homeopathic medicines in the treatment of people who have been exposed to radiation ... including many people, such as Emil Grubbe who were exposed to significant amounts of radiation and lived long and fruitful lives.
In these opening remarks, I also want to urge us all to avoid spreading fear within ourselves and to others. Although it is good to be prepared for potential disasters, it is important to avoid exacerbating these emotions by overfeeding them.
With the media-promoted concerns about radiation drift from Japan and the real and exaggerated fears that many people are experiencing now, the first homeopathic medicine that people today may consider taking is Arsenicum album 30C. Arsenicum album is a leading homeopathic medicine for anxiety and fear, especially around health issues and about being poisoned. Taking a single dose whenever one notices these strong emotional states is reasonable, but consider repeated use if recommended to do so by a professional homeopath.

Conventional Thinking as a Reasonable First Step
The official line about the type and intensity of radiation exposure we face seems to change every day everywhere. People can and should consider this issue when evaluating and determining what they will do.
The American Center for Disease Control (CDC) ( recommends potassium iodide for helping prevent the absorption of radiation into the thyroid gland and provides good, practical information. Essentially, they recommend that people over 12 years of age take 130 mg of iodine in order to flood the thyroid, thereby disabling it from absorbing radioactive iodine. Such actions are certainly prudent if and when there is evidence of radioactive iodide, though to date, exposure to it has not been a public health concern. My discussion of what my family and I will be doing to protect and/or treat exposure to radioactivity is in addition to the CDC recommendations.
Please note, however, that potassium iodide seems to only protect against iodine-related radiation, not other types of radiation from cesium, strontium, nitrogen, and tritium. Further, the Japanese are working to reduce radiation emission by dousing the container with graphite and borax, both of which may change the nature of the emissions.

Scientific Evidence for the Homeopathic Treatment of Environmental Poisons
Before discussing the history of use of homeopathic medicines for exposure to radioactivity, it is first important to know that there is a significant body of research to show the benefits of homeopathic medicines in treating environmental exposures of toxic substances.
Back in 1994, a highly respected group of researchers reviewed 105 animal studies that evaluated the ability of homeopathic medicines to discharge heavy metals from the bodies of mice (Linde, Jonas, Melchart, et al, 1994). This review found that the best results were in the studies that were deemed to be scientifically rigorous. When evaluating only these higher quality studies, the researchers found a significant reduced death rate from exposure to toxic minerals (arsenic, mercury, cadmium, bismuth) when homeopathic doses of these substances were given to the animals (as compared with those given a placebo).
Since 1994, more than a dozen new studies have confirmed these results. A group of university researchers in India have conducted a body of laboratory trials testing the effects of heavy metals on mice which were given homeopathic doses of these toxic substances after exposure (Datta, Mallick, Khuda-Bukhsh, 2001; Mallick, Chakrabart, Khuda-Bukhsh, 2003; Banerjee P, Mallick, Chakrabarti, Guha, et al, 2003; Bhattacharya, 2003; Bhattacharyya SS, Pathak S, 2008; Human and Experimental Toxicology, 2010). * (*It is not appropriate to list all of the studies here, but people with an interest in this subject can review the references in these articles.)
At present, arsenic in groundwater has affected millions of people globally distributed over 20 countries. In parts of West Bengal (India) and Bangladesh alone, over 100 million people are at risk, and supply of arsenic-free water is grossly inadequate.
Attempts to remove groundwater arsenic by using orthodox medicines have mostly been unsuccessful. A potentized homeopathic remedy made from arsenic (Arsenicum album 30C) was administered in a double-blind, placebo-control study to a group of groundwater arsenic affected people, and the arsenic contents in urine and blood were periodically evaluated (Khuda-Bukhsh, AR, Pathak, S, Guha, 2005; Belon, Banerjee, Karmakar, et al, 2007). The activities of various toxicity marker enzymes and compounds in the blood, namely aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, lipid peroxidation and reduced glutathione, were also periodically monitored up to three months. The results are highly encouraging and suggest that the drug can alleviate arsenic poisoning in humans.

Based on this research, it is reasonable to ask if homeopathic doses of radioactive elements and other substances with apparently similar effects are useful.

Experimental Evidence from Homeopathic Treatment of Radiation Exposure
There is not a significant body of studies evaluating the use of homeopathic medicines in the treatment of radiation exposure, but there are a couple of experiments about which people may benefit knowing. Hopefully, knowledge about these previous studies will encourage researchers to replicate them.
Homeopathic research has evaluated the effects of homeopathic medicines to protect against radiation (Khuda-Bukhsh, and Banik, 1991a, 1991b). Albino mice were exposed to 100 to 200 rad of X-rays (sublethal doses) and then evaluated after 24, 48, and 72 hours. Ginseng 6X, 30X, and 200X and Ruta graveolens 30X and 200X were administered before and after exposure. When compared with mice given a placebo as treatment, mice given any of the above homeopathic medicines experienced significantly less chromosomal or cellular damage. Ginseng 30X and 200X, in particular, had significant and sometimes substantial benefits.
In addition to the evidence for the benefits from homeopathic doses of ginseng is other research testing crude doses of it which find that it repairs DNA after radiation exposure (Kim, Lee, Cho, et al., 1996).
In another study, albino guinea pigs were exposed to small doses of X-ray that caused reddening of the skin. Studies showed that homeopathic honeybee (Apis mellifica 7C or 9C) had a protective effect and a roughly 50 percent curative effect on X-ray-induced redness of the skin (Bildet, Guyot, Bonini, et al., 1990). Apis mellifica is a homeopathic medicine for redness, swelling, and itching, all of which are common symptoms that crude doses of bee venom cause ... and thus, homeopathic doses will be found to be effective in treating these symptoms.
Derived from the homeopathic literature and clinical experience over the past many decades, some other potential homeopathic remedies for radiation exposure are listed below, though it is highly recommended to seek out professional homeopathic care to determine the best dose and potency schedule:
  • Radium bromatum
  • X-ray
  • Uranium nitricum
  • Strontium carbonicum
  • Calendula ointment
  • Cadmium sulphuratum
  • Cadmium iodatum
  • Ceanothus americanus
Several of the above medicines are derived from radioactive substances, while others have become known after many decades of clinical experience.
Cadmium sulphuratum, for instance, is a well-known homeopathic medicine used to treat people with cancer who experience side effects from radiation treatment.
Cadmium iodatum might be considered for those people exposed to radiation who did not protect the thyroid with crude doses of potassium iodide. Ceanothus is a leading remedy for spleen problems, and because the effects of radiation are known to affect the spleen, this remedy may be an important one for radioprotection. Calendula (marigold) is a well-known herbal and homeopathic medicine. Highly respected research has found excellent results in using Calendula ointment on people who experienced radiotherapy-induced dermatitis (skin rashes) (Kassab S, Cummings M, Berkovitz, 2009).
It should be noted that homeopaths tend to think of themselves as a part of a health care team. As such, they work with other health and medical professionals as well as public health officials to provide options for people and communities so that safe and effective health care can be available.

UPDATE (April 12, 2011): The original article posted here had 3 short paragraphs about Paul Curie, MD, a leading French homeopath, whose grandson, Pierre Curie, and Pierre's wife, Marie Curie, conducted fundamental research on radium and X-rays, leading Pierre and Marie to win the Nobel Prize. I had referenced a source that asserted that Paul Curie had experimented with small doses of radium, but I have seen discovered that this reference had mistaken Pierre's brother (Paul) with their grandfather. I have deleted the above erroneous 3 paragraphs.
